FAQ
Interested in solar solutions for your property but still have a few questions in mind? We have compiled the most frequently asked questions to help you take the next step with confidence.
It is the process of generating electricity using photovoltaic modules installed on the roof, walls, or other parts of a building belonging to a PT. PLN (Persero) customer, and channeling that electrical energy through the customer’s PLN electricity connection (Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation No. 49, 2018).
The photovoltaic modules (PV Modules) convert solar radiation into DC electricity. This DC output then enters the solar inverter, which converts it into 220/380 V 50Hz AC electricity. The AC electricity can then be used to power electrical appliances. If there is any surplus AC energy produced, it is exported to the PLN grid.
An on-grid system is connected to PLN and operates without battery backup. A hybrid system combines solar panels, batteries, and PLN connection to provide energy savings and backup power. An off-grid system operates independently without PLN, using batteries as the main energy storage source for areas without reliable grid access.
The solar inverter is the main component, or the “brain”, of a Rooftop Solar PV System, particularly in an On-grid System. When the solar inverter is switched on, it requires about 60 seconds to synchronise its reference parameters (voltage, frequency, etc.) with the PLN grid before it can operate. The solar inverter will not function when there is no DC electricity from the photovoltaic modules, for example due to shading or after sunset or when there is no reference from the PLN grid, such as during a PLN power outage.
Battery storage helps maximize the use of solar energy by storing excess electricity for later use. It can reduce dependence on PLN, provide backup power during outages, improve energy efficiency, and help lower electricity costs during peak usage periods.
For a 1 kWp (1,000 Wp) system, approximately 6 m² of area is required, with a weight of around 12 kg/m², depending on the size of the photovoltaic modules used.
When properly installed, a Rooftop Solar PV System can operate for up to 20–25 years. The product warranty for the photovoltaic modules is 10 years and for the solar inverter is 5-10 years, and battery storage is up to 10 years with an installation warranty of 1–2 years.
You can expect to save between 30–50% of your monthly electricity bill.
The installation of a Rooftop Solar PV System must be carried out by a business entity or a central/regional government institution that is registered as an Electricity Supporting Services Business Entity, as published on the website of the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (Dirjen EBTKE), the Directorate General of Electricity, and PT PLN (Persero).
